Enabling robust functionalities for analyzing DICOM images

Display. Create. Modify.

The DICOM Handling Challenge Summarized

DICOM is a comprehensive specification of content and structure, that defines communications protocols for images in the medical industry. Such files contain:

  • Patient ID
  • Site of origin
  • Attributes
  • The image

Having full control over DICOM images is not that easy. Firstly, they can’t be viewed directly on a personal computer without a proper interpreter. Secondly, their file sizes are quite large. Thirdly, as their data is encoded within the header, it becomes challenging to completely analyze the patient’s state.

The Vision Behind the App

The company aimed to bring innovative improvements to the medical imaging market. They envisioned the application of image processing algorithms and 3D modeling in this industry, so all of DICOM’s features could be fully exploited.

In order to fulfill their goals, they got familiar with Scopic’s experience on such services and technologies, so we worked together towards a solution.

The Scopic Solution

This project takes advanced image and 3D data processing to analyze and display DICOM data. In their search for a reliable healthcare software development company, Quantiva hired Scopic. We helped implement some of the bigger features into their application, including:

FastPacs DICOM

The app that simplifies image retrieval and optimizes medical workflows

Handle the clinical data efficiently. Treat the diagnosis easily.

The DICOM Images Challenge Summarized

DICOM images are files used in fields such as orthopedics, general practice, chiropractic, podiatry or veterinary. They contain personal patient information grouped into data sets and are important in exchanging and transmitting medical images.

In contrast with other image file formats such as JPEG or TIFF, the individual DICOM files are not recognized by operating systems as images. As a result, people are not able to view the contents of the image by simply double-clicking on them. It becomes a headache to review the images, let alone edit them. Usually, users need to:

  • Install applications
  • Download applets
  • Customize browsers

The Vision Behind the App

FastPACS’s vision consisted of fully utilizing the digital potential of DICOM for the optimization of workflows in the medical industry. They aimed at finding a user-friendly solution that would provide professionals with:

Review your files – effectively and efficiently.

The Challenge

Many vets are still using paper-based documentation systems that take up valuable time and make storing, managing and accessing pet files a great challenge. It is also very common for pet owners to lose vital medical information about their pets.

Furthermore, the transfer of important documents rarely occurs whenever a pet is adopted by a new owner. With no access to previous illness history, latest test results, vaccination history, and pet allergy reports, the vetinary’s job becomes a lot more complicated.

The Vision

The founders of Metron Image Viewer were on a mission to empower vets and veterinary practitioners to access, review and store client files more easily. They wanted to create a seamless application, with a user-friendly UI that would allow for image downloads and audio comments to be made. Looking to partner with a reliable medical software development company to achieve their goals, they found Scopic.

The Solution

Scopic created a unique application using HTML5 technology. The clear and crisp user interface was designed with the users’ needs in mind, and when working on the project, our developers built in the option to edit the brightness and contrast of uploaded images for enhanced visibility. Users are also able to download these images in jpg or Dicom format.

The Metron Image Viewer app equips vets with the tools they need to easily leave and access audio comments on the uploaded images; thus streamlining their documentation workflow. As the web viewer is connected to the desktop application, all files can also be uploaded seamlessly.
