The ABA Therapy Challenge
Applied behavior analysis (ABA) is a form of therapy that is designed to treat issues with communication, motor skills, and behavioral disorders. ABA therapy helps to identify the causes of an individual’s behavioral challenges and uses select approaches to address these challenges.
ABA nurtures fundamental skills such as looking, listening, requesting, and imitating, as well as complex skills such as reading, conversing, and understanding another person’s perspective. ABA therapy is used in schools, hospitals, clinics, and homes.
The Vision Behind the App
To understand if behavioral improvements are being made, it is important to gather and analyze the data based on responses made by the child. If the chosen strategies are not working, therapists may need to fine-tune the program, so the child begins to improve.
Accel envisioned an application that would automate the data collection and analysis processes, as well as allow therapists to write custom ABA programs that help children progress. To implement their vision, they turned to Scopic.
The Scopic Solution
Scopic developed Accel, an intuitive, audit-proof platform to help elevate ABA therapy practices everywhere. Accel allows users to create custom data collection forms, analyze data with graphs and progress summary, and review notes that summarize clients’ response to intervention.
This mobile application also helps therapists take a wide range of data, including: correct/incorrect, prompt level, task analysis, ABC data, interval recording, celeration, and more.
Accel’s session note templates capture quantitative and qualitative data and allow users to create comprehensive session notes, ensuring clients stay compliant audit-proof.

The Data Handling Challenge Summarized
Individuals, institutions, and companies repeatedly encounter the problem of how to display, keep track, and analyze data for a specific purpose. And often, market solutions are not always enough. The available options may be expensive, require an annual subscription, or may not be adapted to the company’s specific requests. In such cases, it’s best to employ a customized solution.
The Vision Behind the Website
The University of Washington has created a research center dedicated to treating addictions. The center’s mission is to advance research, policy, and practice in order to improve the lives of individuals and communities affected by addiction. Their multidisciplinary staff of health experts works to further understand and prevent the harm caused by addictive substances and behavior. Their data collection and visualization is essential in achieving that.
With this idea in mind, they contacted Scopic to work on a customized website that would be secure and reliable.
The Scopic Solution
Scopic worked together with the UW Research Center and developed a web application. It was built for a small number of patients who were participating in treatment in the UW’s clinic. The website allows to track patients’ log in, complete symptom rating questionnaires, and review summary reports with line graphs that show their symptom ratings data over time. The website has password-protected logins, ensuring HIPAA compliance, and also allows viewing of patient-centered questionnaire data as graphical data visualizations to help assess patients better.
